BUTTING – Surface treatment

The corrosion resistance of stainless steels is mainly based on an optimum surface quality. An important prerequisite is the production of a metallic bright surface protected by a passive layer.

BUTTING has lots of possibilities to produce a corrosion resisting surface. This service can also be subcontracted. The following processes can be carried out.

Pipes and fittings in stainless steels are always subjected to a full body pickling. This ensures the cleanliness of the goods and the formation of the passive layer protecting against corrosion, also in inaccessible areas. We have the following pickling basins at our disposal: several basins in the dimensions 20.0 x 4.0 x 2.0 m and more than 16 basins in lengths up to 27 m.

In addition to the chemical surface treatment we use different mechanical methods – mainly grinding of the inside or outside pipe surface. For grinding of outside surfaces BUTTING uses radial grinding devices. We grind pipes with dimensions of 20 mm up to 350 mm OD and lengths of 4 m up to 18 m using 180 up to 400 grit. For the grinding of inside surfaces we use radial and axial grinding devices.

Other options of surface treatment would be glass bead blasting and shot peening using multiple use blasting agents. Products having lengths of 4 m up to 12 m and diameters of 114 mm up to 762 mm can be treated.
