BUTTING – Clad materialsPipes and piping components made of metallurgically clad materials have for many years been proving their worth in the oil and gas industry, environmental technology and in sea water desalination plants, and the demand for them is constantly increasing. BUTTING has been manufacturing and supplying high-quality pipes and piping components for these sensitive fields of application now for more than twenty years.
Clad plates represent an economical alternative to highly alloyed steel plates. They consist of a basic material and a corrosion-resistant contact material. This produces an ideal combination of the mechanical properties of the base material and the corrosion resistance of the contact material. The results include lower wall thicknesses, a considerable accompanying weight saving compared to austenitic full wall pipes, and reduced material costs.
For the manufacture of metallurgically clad pipes, for the sake of economic efficiency we mainly use roll-bonded pipes as a raw material, and for this purpose, the two metal layers are bonded firmly together by a diffusion bridge. The metallurgical bond of carbon-manganese steel and stainless steel is produced in the process by a simultaneous increase in pressure and temperature during the hot rolling process. This is a very reproducible and manageable process. Thus as the end result, a very durable bond emerges, free of porosities and inter-metallic precipitation at the homogeneous phase boundary.
